Different Hearing Aids for Different Inputs
English is not necessarily the only input to a hearing aid. What about a bilingual client who speaks Spanish, or Japanese? How would the settings need to be changed for the non-English program? What adjustments need to be made for listening to music? In this case it turns out that the changes have more to do with the hardware of the hearing aid, rather than software programming changes. Music as an input to a hearing aid poses some interesting challenges. In many cases it comes down to an issue of the number of bits in the front end A/D converter. A commonly used tool -the SII- tells most of the story but is far from the entire picture.

Musicians and the Prevention of Hearing Loss
Music exposure can pose a problem, especially with the advent of “portable” music. Despite the complexity of the human auditory system, it does not know the difference between industrial noise and music. Indeed, many of the factors can equally affect music exposure as well as industrial exposure. This talk is an overview of those factors affecting hearing for musicians as well as environmental strategies and hearing protection to minimize the potential damaging effects of music.
