Motivating Children with Autism and Other Developmental Challenges to Speak:   Strategies to Improve Communication and Vocalizations
Tamara will discuss and demonstrate procedures to shape vocalizations in children with autism who demonstrate difficulty in development of speech production skills. The use of word shells (successive approximations to target words as popularized by Nancy Kaufman) during verbal imitation (echoic), mand (request), and tact (label) training and application of Kasper and Kaufman’s Sign to Talk Noun and Verb materials will receive emphasis.

Establishing Foundational Skills for Early Conversations in Children with Autism
Children with autism may demonstrate language skills, but not use language to converse with others. Tamara will discuss and demonstrate procedures to teach prerequisites to conversation. Methods to improve motivation for conversation, establishing strong labeling, receptive and intraverbal repertoires will be provided and demonstrated via video. Methods to teach requests for attention and information, responding to and discriminating WH questions, and several research proven methods for “scripting” children to converse with others will receive emphasis.
