Abstract: The field of dysphagia is still relatively in its infancy. Since the 1980s, with new research emerging daily, practice patterns in the assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders are changing at a rapid pace in an effort for clinicians to provide the most evidence-based services. Despite this, there is a gap between research and actual implementation in clinical practice. As a result, many practice patterns persist to this day which are not only no longer supported by the literature, but also serve as a hindrance to patient improvement and in the worst cases may negatively impact patients’ health and quality of life. In this presentation, the most common myths from normal and abnormal swallowing, the clinical swallow evaluation, instrumental swallow evaluations, the benefit of diet modifications and selection of interventions will be reviewed. Evidence-based alternatives will be explored. This will be an interactive presentation for clinicians to collaborate and support one another as we all strive to move forward in dysphagia assessment and treatment.
