  Title: Bridging the Gap: Technology for Challenging Hearing Environments


COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will provide attendees with an overview of hearing assistive technology (HAT) to support individuals with hearing loss in challenging listening environments, as well as for home safety and travel. The course will focus on how technology can complement existing amplification and improve communication, access to information, independence, and safety across a variety of everyday situations.



   COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Identify challenging listening environments where standard amplification may not provide enough benefit 
  • Learn various hearing assistive technology devices available for personal and home use 
  • Establish criteria to refer for further hearing assistive technology evaluation

   PRESENTERS

Dr. Michele DiStefano, AuD, CCC-A

Dr. Michele DiStefano is Director of CHC's Shelley and Steven Einhorn Audiology Center and Berelson Hearing Technology Center. Dr. DiStefano joined CHC in 2017 with expertise in pediatric audiology and hearing aids honed at Beth Israel Medical Center, Clarke Schools, and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. A graduate of the audiology program at CUNY-Brooklyn College with a doctorate degree from  A.T. Still University of Health Sciences, Dr DiStefano sees children and adults at CHC with a focus on comprehensive diagnostic testing, fitting of amplification/FM systems, post-fitting counseling and Early Intervention. Dr. DiStefano is a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) with specialized training and certification for caring for individuals with dementia.

Dr. Nicole Genser, AuD, CCC-A

Dr. Nicole Genser, whose primary clinical interests are amplification, aural rehabilitation, and electrophysiology, provides audiological services to both children and adults. She actively contributes to various CHC outreach and community-education initiatives. With a strong foundation in research and advocacy, Dr. Genser has presented and published at both state and national levels on accessibility for young adults and healthcare professionals with hearing loss in postsecondary settings. She earned her Doctor of Audiology degree from Montclair State University and completed her fourth year residency at CHC. She continues to serve as an executive board member with the New Jersey State Hearing Loss Association of America.
