TOPIC OF THIS STUDY: The Lived Educational Experiences of Student Clinicians with Non-Apparent Disabilities in Communication Sciences and Disorders: Perspectives of Recent Graduates on the Current Culture of Inclusion
PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY: The purpose of this research study is to better understand the lived educational experiences of student clinicians with non-apparent disabilities. Through the voices of recent graduates of NYS master’s programs in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) or speech-language pathology (within 5 years post-graduation), this study will explore retrospectively their experiences with inclusion.
Topics to explore will be the issues and challenges faced and the successful practices experienced by former student clinicians with non-apparent disabilities (which includes but is not limited to learning disabilities, ADHD, asthma and allergies, visual, speech and hearing impairments, mental health issues, neurological impairment, epilepsy, heart disease, migraines and headaches, endocrine dysfunction, and digestive disorders).
What is learned from this study will be used to develop the researcher’s doctoral dissertation and may help future researchers and university administrators to improve upon the academic and clinical experiences of student clinicians with non-apparent disabilities within master’s programs in CSD to support the development of disability-affirmative environments.
Who is Eligible to Participate? You are eligible if you meet the following three criteria:
- Recent Graduate (within 5 years) of a NYS Graduate Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) or Speech-Language Pathology
- Have a non-apparent disability diagnosed by a medical professional
- Are currently practicing speech-language pathology
What will you be asked to do? Engage in one 60–90-minute telephone interview with a researcher from St. John Fisher College. In the interview you will be asked questions about you graduate clinical experiences as a student clinician with non-apparent disabilities
